The Family Plan is the Best Deal (The #1 Hack)
The Microsoft 365 Family plan is the single best value. It allows you to share all benefits, including 1TB of OneDrive storage *each*, with up to six people. Splitting the cost is dramatically cheaper than any individual plan.
Use the Free Web Apps
For basic document editing, Microsoft offers free, powerful web versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint at Office.com. For many users, these are sufficient and don't require a paid subscription.
Check for 'New PC' Offers
Many new Windows laptops come with a free 1-year trial of Microsoft 365 Personal. Make sure to check your new device for this offer before you purchase a subscription.
Pre-Cancellation Safety Checklist
You Must Free Up Your OneDrive Storage
CRITICAL: After you cancel, your 1TB of OneDrive storage will revert to the free 5GB limit. You will NOT lose your existing files, but you will be unable to add or edit any files until you download your data and get below the 5GB quota.
Your Desktop Apps Become 'Read-Only'
VERY IMPORTANT: The Office apps on your computer (Word, Excel, etc.) will enter a reduced functionality mode. You will be able to view and print your documents, but you will lose all editing and saving capabilities.
Your Outlook Email is Safe, But Storage Shrinks
Your @outlook.com or @hotmail.com email account is safe. However, the premium ad-free experience will end, and your mailbox storage will revert from 50GB to the standard 15GB, which is shared with OneDrive.
Benefits Continue Until Your Plan Expires
After you cancel the auto-renewal, your premium benefits, including the 1TB of storage, will remain active until the final day of your current billing period.

Will I lose all my files if I cancel Microsoft 365?
No, your files are not deleted. However, your OneDrive storage will shrink to 5GB. If you have more files than that, your account will be 'frozen' and you must download your excess files before you can add new ones.
What happens to the other members on my Family plan?
If you are the plan manager, all members you invited will also lose their 1TB of storage and premium app access. Their accounts will revert to the free tier. It's important to notify them beforehand.
Can I still use Word and Excel after I cancel?
You can use them in two ways: the desktop apps will become 'read-only' for viewing and printing, and you can use the free, fully-functional versions on the web at Office.com.
Do I get a refund for my annual plan?
Generally, no. Subscriptions are non-refundable. When you cancel, you are turning off auto-renewal, and your access will continue until the end of your paid billing cycle.
We'vell track your subscription, remind you before renewal, and help you avoid unwanted charges.
